"My little leper child"

Let me just start out by saying how much I love the work environment at the museum. Everyone is very friendly and people are always calling out to each other across the office and joking with each other. People are constantly sharing their food and today the membership coordinator made cookies for everyone. If I have to work in a cubicle when I am older, I definitely want to work at a place like MCA Denver.

All in all, this week was pretty uneventful. I spent Monday researching and entering data from photo-release forms into excel, creating a mini-contact list for Ama. Yesterday was considerably more exciting. The museum is in the process of installing a new exhibit which opens tomorrow, and I spent Wednesday helping Katie, the artist, with the finishing touches. This included touching up a wall with some beautiful turquoise paint, scrubbing paint residue off of the floor with nothing but water, and taping mock advertisements in patterns on the bathroom walls. I am going to the opening tomorrow evening and am very curious to see what the finished product will look like.

Today I met with Ama to discuss my research progress. Over the last two weeks, I have been focusing on museums who host performances that are related to exhibits they are putting on. For example, the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia hosted an children's event called Pajama-Ram Reading Night. The purpose of the event was to make their current exhibit, a collection of drawings by children's book creator Maurice Sendak, interactive and accessible to children. One of the featured events included a dance done by "Wild Things" from Where The Wild Things Are in which children could participate. My research is first and foremost directed at looking into how contemporary art can be made more accessible to more people and this seemed like a great method. However, Ama wants to MCA Denver's dance program to be unrelated to current exhibits. Instead, she wants to reach out to a demographic of people who may go to see dance performances all the time, yet have never even been to a contemporary art museum. This input had redirected my research considerably, and I am finding much more material than before.

Oh, and I'm almost positive that I got into Mount Holyoke, which is a huge relief.

  1. Significance of the title?

Sounds like your project is going really well! The focus sounds great, and I'm glad to hear that you are meeting so many people at the museum. Have you thought of doing some sort of survey of people who come to events?

Congrats on MH. Never a doubt in my mind.

  2. I just figured I'd pick my favorite quote from the museum staff and use it as a title each week.

I haven't. That's a great idea. I'll talk to Ama and see what she says.
